PEOPLE
Identify what motivates people
State the needs of people from their point of view
In order to create anything useful, it is critical to reveal what people think and feel is important to them.
Why identify what motivates people?
People are more complex than two-dimensional sketches on stickies or names in a spreadsheet.
Giving voice to people's needs and goals demonstrates an understanding of what they value.
Documenting what we know about people’s motivations can identify gaps in our knowledge.
There are different ways to identify what motivates people. You could...
Refer to survey results
Conduct research interviews
Use an activity to prioritise what matters most to people
A good approach is one that...
Documents motivations as if the person were saying or thinking them
Includes different types of goals, like rational, aspirational, or emotional needs
Identifies gaps in your knowledge
Enables you to update your understanding for everyone to see
We recommend the following steps to describe what people are thinking and feeling. This will be a key part to creating a visual map later of all the people we need to consider.
Identify key people. You should already have a comprehensive list.
Create speech and thought bubbles. Write down how people might ask for help, or think about what they need.
Discuss your ideas together. Read them aloud.
Choose the best wording
Document everything in a format that can be easily shared and updated
Highlight any gaps in your understanding
Now that you know how to identify what motivates people, it’s time for you to make a start.
